Know Your Context

Because every operation is unique, you must evaluate several factors to determine which regenerative practices are viable for your specific situation. These considerations are an important first step to setting realistic and achievable goals.

A few of the things to consider when beginning your regenerative journey are:

General Operations

  • Soil Types: Identify the specific taxonomic properties of your ground to understand its natural strengths and limitations.

  • Starting Condition: Perform soil health testing to establish a biological and chemical baseline.

  • Management History: Review current tillage practices and overall management to see what can be reduced or refined.

  • Environmental Constraints: Factor in local weather patterns and climate limitations that impact growing seasons.

  • Objectives: Define your specific goals for shifting to regenerative practices, whether they are financial, biological, or both.

Cover Crops

  • Rotation Compatibility: Evaluate how cover crops fit into your current cash crop rotation.

  • Equipment Availability: Assess your current planter or drill setup and whether no-till equipment is available or necessary.

  • Technical Support: Do you have personal experience with cover crops, or do you have a trusted advisor or neighbor who can offer guidance?

Livestock Integration

  • Experience & Skillset: Determine your comfort level and history with managing animals.

  • Required Infrastructure: Evaluate your existing facilities, including water access, feed areas, fencing, and transportation.

  • Strategic Suitability: Select the type and number of livestock that align with your specific goals for the land.

  • Labor Commitment: Be realistic about the personal time required to manage livestock daily.
