Diospyros virginiana

Michigan native: No

Common Persimmon is a deciduous tree that is best grown in average to dry, well-drained soil but will grow in many different conditions. It tolerates drought, shaded sites, and urban sites. This tree produces an edible fruit that is sweet when ripe in the fall, tastes similar to an apricot and high in Vitamins A & C.  Persimmons are dioecious, bearing male and female flowers on separate trees. So for best fruit production, plant multiple trees. They can reach 60 ft in height but can be maintained to only reach 12-20 ft.
